Grade 6 : ART APPRECIATION

Learning is not only limited to the four walls of the classroom. As we equip our students to be 21st century learners, we want them to experience activities that will allow them to think critically, speak and engage in conversations confidently and grow holistically.

As part of our Unit Theme in Term 1, which is about appreciating traditional arts and music, our grade 6 students visited the Ardel Gallery of Modern Art. The Gallery holds an art exhibition called “The Portrait” from the 1st of June until the 16th of July wherein they showcase portraiture of 17 different artists across Thailand. This activity provides an opportunity for our students to not only learn art from pictures and videos but experience them firsthand.

The objectives of the activity include:

🔵identify the exhibit, some pieces of art and artists

🟠write sentences related to art

🟢appreciate art by visiting an art gallery

🟤reflect on the importance of art in society

As the students gather inside the gallery, they look at a variety of portraits made by 17 Thai artists. First, the students cite the name of the exhibit. Then, as they move around the room, they choose three pieces of art that they like and they identify various information about the artists. Finally, some students take the time to interview the curator, Ms. View and ask her several questions about the exhibit and Ardel Gallery as a whole.

To culminate our theme in Unit 1, we believe that it is necessary to expose our students to real-life experiences outside the classroom. Through this activity, they get to reflect on the importance of art in today’s society and how art, in all its forms affect some people’s lives.

In the future, as we continue to tackle different topics and themes in ESL, we hope to bring them again to places where they can continue to learn and have fun at the same time.
